On our way to see the Grand Canyon (watch this space) we decided to fly into Las Vegas, for one reason only. I wanted to see the Sphere. You know, the one that you see all over TikTok showing it’s 316′ tall and 516′ wide projections. The Sphere is an entertainment complex – the largest spherical building in the world. Inside, there are 18,600 seats to accommodate and mesmerize guests.

Simply put, you gotta do this. The feeling of having this incredible projection all around you and the fidelity of the images was quite magical! Think planetarium only super-sized. The film that is playing is about 50 minutes in length and is entitled “Postcards from Earth”. The film, itself, is very well done telling the story of how our planet came to be, how life evolved and how mankind gradually but persistently used up all of the precious resources and polluted the air, water and land to a point when human’s had to leave Earth to give it a chance to heal. Interesting message but not even remotely feasible – obviously, since the closest habitable planet is 4.22 light years away!

The Sphere at night – must be a bit distracting to motorists with its constantly changing screen!

So, if I had one criticism, it would be that the message is wrong. We shouldn’t be teaching our children that once we use up all of our planet’s resources we can just leave and find another planet. We need to look after our home as if it were the only one we’ll ever have. Because it is.

You felt the ground moving as this beast moved towards you! (Those are rows of seats bottom left.)

Your ticket price is for a 2-hour experience – you will be able to take in the “displays” for about 45 minutes prior to the show. The pre-show fun is about AI robots – some of which interact with the crowd and actually have a sense of humour. The one that amazed me most demonstrated a sophisticated sound system which had such pin-point accuracy that you would hear a different instrument depending on where you stood. In one spot, all I could hear was saxophone, then I moved a few feet and had an electric guitar shredding in my ear. Another location, and the piano played like you were right next to it. Very cool.

The inside of The Sphere is very futuristic and otherworldly. Be sure to look around when you are heading up the escalator or you will miss some awesome continuously changing holograms.

We went for a 2 pm show which was perfect as it left the evening free to pursue other entertainment and restaurants.

The Sphere is located just off the Las Vegas Strip – but you probably can’t walk there. Better to grab an Uber from your hotel. Just trust me on this – you can see it but you can’t easily get to it, especially in the heat of the day. Tickets are pricey. I would suggest seats in the 300 level. 400 is also good.

The fidelity of this praying mantis on the gigantic screen was simply awesome!

The Sphere (for tickets and show times). Reserve well in advance for the best seat selection.

Location: 255 Sands Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89169

Tickets start at $85 pp US. However, we paid about $150 pp to get the best seats. There are lots of ushers everywhere inside and outside the building to guide you to your seats. You can buy beverages (including alcohol) inside. Leave your backpacks at the hotel.
