On our recent weekend visit to Seattle to visit Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley (read about it HERE) we stopped in at the quaint town of La Conner located in Skagit County, Washington, USA.
La Conner has a permanent population of around 1,000 and in April each year it hosts the annual Skagit ValleyTulip Festival.
Located about 15 minutes off the main highway, La Conner is well worth a stopover to spend a couple of hours. We were delighted to find dozens of different art galleries, gift shops and restaurants. The Museum of Northwest Art is located here which has a permanent collection of artists of the area as well as rotating art exhibits.
The historical downtown area, bordered by Second, Morris and Commercial streets meets up with the piers running along the banks of Swinomish Channel. It was a bit of a grey day when we were there in October, but the rain held off and we had a delightful afternoon strolling around the town.
We had a tasty lunch at Nell Thorn Waterfront Bistro and Bar. They do a Dungeness Crab Eggs Benedict that is fabulous! There were lots of choices on the menu and all the food coming out of the kitchen looked yummy!

La Conner has a huge cross section of an 800 year old Fir tree on display. It was fascinating to look out the rings that age the tree and the time line of events as the centuries went by. Kind of sad that the tree didn’t live on for eternity!
I’d like to go back in December to do some Christmas shopping as I know the shops will have unique gifts.
